This presentation of Care of a Patient with Pulmonary Embolism: Leveraging HIT was an interactive group role-play. I have attached the slides with our associated script. The roll-play includes the below characters and associated process.
Patient - Enters ED with symptoms; we demonstrate medical knowledge associated of key complaints and the problem list leading to decisions around a probable diagnosis and needed tests
Attending in the ER - Formulates diagnosis and care plan, utilizes decision support tools and online intelligence tools
Pharmacist - Reviews prescription order, utilizes decision support tools and online intelligence tools
Patient - Participates in care at home; as the patient utilizes home tools, the physician and care team are allowed to focus on clinical activities, streamlining operations
Physician - Handles follow-up care; workflow is improved because the family has utilized the patient portal and online tools
In the conclusion, we reflect that each role was enhanced with HIT, decision support tools and portals.
This course, focusing on clinical thinking, is a great opportunity for me to grow in the understanding of the clinical side of my career. As I better understand the workflow within a healthcare setting, I can apply technical solutions maximizing the opportunity for success. Technical solutions have to be integrated into the everyday workflow, keeping a clinician engaged with the patient. With the current strain on health care personnel already to take on non-clinical responsibilities, new solutions have to get past the learning curve and development phase and begin to show vast improvements in workflow. If clinicians are successfully utilizing the tool, our health care system will reduce costs and patients will have better outcomes.
